Midwifery Services at Community Roots Midwife Collective

Full-Spectrum Homebirth Midwife Care in Boulder County

Midwifery care is holistic in nature, grounded in an understanding of the social, emotional, cultural, spiritual, psychological, and physical experiences of all humans.

Our midwifery care

We serve families across Boulder County and surrounding areas with heart-centered care that honors the physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Our model is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves compassionate, culturally affirming, and community-rooted care — especially those from under-resourced and historically excluded communities. We center informed consent, shared decision-making, and deep connection in every aspect of our work.

What to Expect

Birth at Home

Start with a “Meet the Midwives” Gathering
We host monthly gatherings in Longmont where you can meet our team, ask questions, and learn more about our care model. It's a welcoming space to connect with other families and explore if homebirth is right for you.

During your prenatal care with Community Roots Midwife Collective, you’ll have monthly visits until 28 weeks, biweekly visits from 28 to 36 weeks, and weekly (or as needed) visits from 36 weeks until birth. Around 36 weeks, we also provide a home visit with your full birth team. Each visit lasts about an hour and includes physical exams, emotional check-ins, education, and shared decision-making. We prioritize informed consent for all procedures and create space to build a trusting relationship. Routine labs and tests include an initial panel (CBC, blood type, STI screening, Pap smear, and genetic screening), a 28-week screening (CBC, antibody screen, and gestational diabetes), and a 36-week CBC and Group B Strep culture. We also offer referrals for ultrasounds and additional genetic testing as needed.

Postpartum Care

We provide in-home postpartum visits at 1 day, 3 days, and 1 week after birth, followed by office or in-home visits at 2, 4, and 6 weeks, with additional support available as needed. During these visits, we check on the well-being of both the birthing parent and baby, offering guidance and care tailored to your recovery and transition. We also offer standard newborn screenings, including the metabolic screen, hearing test, and CCHD (Critical Congenital Heart Disease) screen.

We are on call for your homebirth from 37 to 42 weeks, with two licensed midwives attending your birth — and we strive to ensure you’ve met everyone who will be present. Birth support includes in-home labor checks, continuous care during active labor and delivery, and immediate postpartum support for both you and your baby. We perform a full newborn exam, assist with breastfeeding, and offer optional newborn treatments such as Vitamin K and erythromycin eye ointment. In the event a hospital transfer is needed, one of our midwives will accompany you and continue to provide support throughout the experience.

Fourth Trimester Support Program

CRMC's Fourth Trimester Support program is designed to nurture families through the postpartum period with additional layers of care, connection, and healing. The program includes a prenatal visit between 28–36 weeks to begin building relationship and prepare for the postpartum journey, along with group education classes focused on birth preparation, postpartum planning, infant feeding, and newborn care. We also offer access to supportive healing practices through trusted community practitioners, including herbal, emotional, and body-based therapies. The program is offered on a sliding scale from $1,600 to $50 based on need, with additional costs for any herbs or supplements. While we are unable to accept Medicaid, sliding scale applications are available to help make this support accessible.

Prenatal Care

The Cost of a Home Birth

The baseline investment for your homebirth is $6,000, with sliding scale option from $500- $8,500.  Our scale allows for those not able to pay our baseline fee to still have access to care on a first come first serve basis; we currently have two sliding scale fee spaces available per month. We have a sliding scale document that we require people to read, and for those who feel they qualify for a spot on the reduced rate, we will have them fill out an application that will be reviewed by The Friends of CRMC advisory committee. Please attend a Meet the Midwives event and we will provide you with the application.

Insurance Coverage:
Unfortunately we are unable to bill Medicaid. Please check out our Sliding Scale to access funds to help you receive our care.

We are always out of network with private insurance and can only bill if you have "out-of-network maternity coverage." In order to see what coverage you have, get a free Verification of Benefits from our insurance biller HERE. Put GABBY as our account manager and RACHEL ENGEL as your midwife. We will get back to you with what your plan looks like, but we can never guarantee any specific payment. We submit for reimbursement in the postpartum time, and payment can take 30-60 days. You will still need to pay the agreed upon Base Midwifery Fee in full by 34-weeks.
